North Rim Viewpoints of Grand Canyon Set for Reopening

The Grand Canyon’s North Rim is preparing to welcome back visitors to two of its most cherished viewpoints. Starting Wednesday, October 1, Cape Royal and Point Imperial will once again be accessible, following closures due to the Dragon Bravo Fire.

Visitors will be able to reach these sites via the Cape Royal Road, and State Route 67 will be open up to the W1 road at mile marker 11. Ed Keable, Superintendent of Grand Canyon National Park, emphasized the significance of this reopening: “Reopening portions of the North Rim allows visitors to once again experience some of the park’s most scenic areas while we continue to assess post-fire impacts and begin recovery efforts.”

These areas will welcome guests from sunrise to sunset, though overnight stays will not be permitted except at Swamp and Fire points. Travelers are advised to prepare for a remote experience, as there will be no power, running water, cell service, or visitor services available in these parts of the park.

The reopening is set to last until November 30 or until the first significant snowfall. Meanwhile, other sections of the North Rim remain closed due to safety concerns and ongoing recovery efforts from the extensive 145,000-acre Dragon Bravo Fire.

Additionally, the North Kaibab Trail is closed indefinitely. The trail has suffered considerable damage, including rockfall in its upper sections. Assessment and recovery efforts are ongoing, with updates provided on the park’s website.
