Fire Incident at Cochise County Jail Raises Concerns Over Facility’s Condition
A recent fire at the Cochise County jail has brought to light pressing concerns regarding the facility’s state. Several individuals, including both staff and inmates, are currently undergoing medical assessments as a result of the incident.
According to the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, the fire, which occurred on Friday morning, originated from a malfunctioning door motor in a loading area of the jail. This malfunction led to toxic smoke spreading across the loading zone and a nearby hallway that connects to the kitchen.
The initial response involved evaluating three kitchen workers, two inmates, and a detention officer for smoke inhalation and minor injuries. Subsequently, six more staff members required medical evaluation.
The Sheriff’s Office has described the jail’s conditions as “deplorable,” highlighting an urgent need for long-term renovations. The facility has been in operation since 1985, and this incident underscores the call for necessary updates.
