Lightning Incident Near Humphreys Peak Injures Two

In a dramatic turn of events on Wednesday, two individuals found themselves injured following a lightning strike close to the summit of Humphreys Peak, Arizona’s highest point. The incident highlights the unpredictable and hazardous weather conditions that can occur at high elevations.

The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, represented by spokesperson Jon Paxton, confirmed that one individual is a local from Flagstaff, while the other hails from Canada. Details regarding their identities remain undisclosed.

Due to challenging weather, the rescue operation faced difficulties as a helicopter was unable to take off. Consequently, search and rescue teams embarked on foot, tackling the arduous trail to reach the victims situated at the saddle between Humphreys and Agassiz peaks, approximately a mile short of the summit.

Upon arrival, paramedics evaluated the condition of the injured. One of the men, though hurt, managed to partially walk down the trail. However, the second individual required assistance and was anticipated to be transported using a wheeled basket.

Uncertainty remains about whether the injuries were a result of a direct lightning strike or debris propelled by the strike. The incident underscores the treacherous nature of the San Francisco Peaks, where strong winds and severe weather are not uncommon.

Humphreys Peak stands at an imposing 12,633 feet, with its trail demanding a strenuous 5-mile hike each way, involving an elevation gain exceeding 3,400 feet.
