Governor announces new state Board of Public Education member

Gov. Greg Gianforte’s office announced Friday morning that Amanda Mills from Belgrade has been appointed to the state Board of Public Education, filling a vacancy until 2033. This position requires senate confirmation in the 2027 Legislative session. The board, established by the 1972 Constitution, has “general supervision over the elementary and secondary schools of the state” and oversees accreditation standards, teacher certification, suspensions, and state equalization aid distribution.

Mills, a learning and development manager at Williams Plumbing, Heating, and Civil Construction in Belgrade, focuses on apprenticeship programs and workforce training as part of the state trades education initiative. Previously, she managed training and education programs at the Department of Veterans Affairs and began her career as a teacher. Her educational background includes a bachelor’s degree from Life Pacific University and a master’s from Chapman University.

Last October, Governor Gianforte visited Williams Plumbing, emphasizing that trades education is a “top priority” for preparing students for future careers. Board members serve seven-year terms, with a maximum of four from the same political party. The board is chaired by Tim Tharp of Savage, with Ron Slinger from Miles City as vice chair. Additional members include Julia Maxwell (Marion), Renee Rasmussen (Clancy), Lisa Schmidt (Conrad), Hannah Nieskens (Cardwell), Lydia Comstock (Great Falls), Superintendent Susie Hedalen, Commissioner of Higher Education Clay Christian, and Gianforte.
