President Trump has issued a stark warning to Iran, threatening significant military action against its civilian infrastructure should an agreement to end the ongoing conflict not be reached by Tuesday night. Central to these negotiations is the demand for an open Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for global oil shipments. The president emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that if no deal is reached by 8 p.m. ET, the U.S. could initiate a massive assault on Iranian infrastructure.
“Every bridge in Iran will be decimated by 12 o’clock tomorrow night, where every power plant in Iran will be out of business, burning, exploding and never to be used again,” Trump declared during a recent White House press briefing. Despite the aggressive rhetoric, Trump expressed reluctance about the potential destruction, indicating a preference to avoid such drastic measures.
The conflict with Iran, now exceeding six weeks, has seen fluctuating timelines and goals from the U.S. administration. Trump hinted at possible U.S. involvement in rebuilding efforts if further strikes were to occur, though specifics on this support remain vague.
One contentious issue remains the status of the Strait of Hormuz. Trump’s stance has varied, with demands for Iran to open the strait and suggestions that allies should take responsibility. In a social media post on Easter Sunday, Trump used strong language urging Iran to comply, while also suggesting the U.S. might impose tolls on the strait’s traffic.
When questioned about the potential for U.S. strikes on civilian targets to be considered war crimes, Trump dismissed such concerns. “I hope I don’t have to do it,” he remarked, highlighting his preference for a peaceful resolution.
During the press conference, details emerged about a rescue mission for a U.S. airman downed by Iranian forces. Trump called the operation “risky” but emphasized the military’s commitment to leaving no soldier behind.
As diplomatic efforts continue, a ceasefire proposal from mediating countries, including Pakistan, has been introduced. However, Trump refrained from discussing the specifics of this proposal, simply acknowledging Iran as an active participant in negotiations.
The ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran has already impacted global oil prices, with U.S. gas prices reaching an average of $4 per gallon. Despite these challenges, Trump assured that the U.S. would never allow Iran to possess nuclear weapons, even if it means enduring higher fuel costs temporarily.
Public opinion shows declining support for the war, with a recent CNN poll revealing a drop in approval ratings among Republicans. As the midterm elections approach, economic concerns, particularly fuel prices, remain significant for voters.
