Senator Mark Kelly Pushes for Bipartisan Immigration Reform
In a significant move towards immigration reform, Arizona Democratic Senator Mark Kelly has joined forces with a group of lawmakers to support the Dignity Act. This legislation, officially titled “Dignity for Immigrants while Guarding our Nation to Ignite and Deliver the American Dream,” aims to revamp existing immigration policies.
The Dignity Act is a revised proposal building on previous legislation from 2023. According to the bill introduced last year, it seeks to create a legal pathway for DREAMers while enforcing stricter penalties for those violating immigration laws. Among its provisions, the bill includes a 60-day period for asylum eligibility assessments and aims to streamline court procedures.
This legislative effort prioritizes immigrants already residing in the United States and currently boasts 40 sponsors from both the Democratic and Republican parties.
Senator Kelly emphasizes the need for a fair approach to immigration, stating, “These folks are as American as my own two kids. In what world does it make sense to focus time and resources chasing down and holding people like them rather than chasing down criminals?”
As of now, the bill has not yet progressed to a committee vote and is awaiting further action in the House of Representatives. It has remained stagnant since July of last year.
