Flint Residents Begin Receiving Payments from Water Crisis Settlement
In a significant development for Flint residents, letters detailing settlement awards related to the city’s water crisis have been sent out this week. This marks another step in the distribution of a federal class-action settlement valued at over $600 million, aimed at compensating those affected by lead contamination in their water supply.
The initial payments focus on property claims, with settlements for adult personal injury claims anticipated next month. This follows the 2014 switch of Flint’s water supply from the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department to the Flint River, under the direction of an emergency financial manager appointed by then-Governor Rick Snyder.
Flint’s aging water infrastructure, combined with the absence of corrosion control treatments recommended by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, resulted in lead and other contaminants leaching into the water supply. The settlement, finalized in 2023, addresses claims against Michigan state, the city of Flint, and other involved parties.
Melissa Mays, a plaintiff from the original lawsuit, shared that she and others intend to use the funds for essential home repairs necessitated by the water damage. “A lot of people need to — would like to — get caught up on their water bills, a lot of people would like to be able to pay off doctor bills, pay off home repair bills to fix their homes to where they are safe, to pay for tutors for their kids,” Mays stated.
Mays expressed her satisfaction at the start of payments but questioned the delay in the process. “The reality is that out of all the work that we’ve continued to do for 12 years, we’ve made a lot of headway, they’re still just dragging their feet to give the residents of Flint anything,” she commented.
The current payments address property claims where multiple claimants are approved for a single property, with a maximum award of $1,000 to be shared among them. As per the official Flint water settlement website, 7,872 out of nearly 11,000 approved claimants have received their payments as of Wednesday.
Future payments for adults with personal injury claims are pending federal judge approval, with distributions expected to commence next month. Notably, minors during the crisis will receive the majority of the settlement funds, emphasizing the long-term impacts on the community’s youth.
