The Impact of HR 1 on Arizona Families: A Year Later
In a gathering in downtown Tucson, Fernando Quiroz engaged an audience of about 30 individuals in a simple yet thought-provoking exercise. He asked them to jot down their previous night’s dinner on paper plates. “And once you do that, I want you to flip it over. What do you see?” Quiroz inquired. “You see an empty plate. That’s the reality que nuestra gente — our communities — are facing each and every day.”
Quiroz, who serves as the Arizona organizer for Bread for the World, a faith-based advocacy group focused on anti-hunger policies, was among several participants at the event. The meeting was centered around the ramifications of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, also known as HR 1, which has been in effect for nearly a year.
The discussion shed light on significant issues affecting local families, particularly the 450,000 Arizona families who have lost food assistance following the federal law’s implementation. Additionally, the looming changes to Medicaid in Arizona, known as ACCCHS, could potentially result in 420,000 people losing their health insurance come January.
