Muskegon Resident Sues Over Cyclosporiasis Infection Linked to Taco Bell
In a legal battle that highlights ongoing concerns about foodborne illnesses, a woman from Muskegon is pursuing legal action against both a Taco Bell franchisee and a lettuce supplier. The lawsuit stems from a cyclosporiasis infection she claims to have contracted after dining at a Taco Bell in Whitehall.
According to the federal lawsuit filed recently, Kellye O’Hara consumed hard shell tacos with lettuce at the fast-food restaurant in early July. Shortly thereafter, she began experiencing severe symptoms. Her condition worsened to the point where she sought medical attention at an urgent care facility, eventually leading to hospitalization in Grand Rapids. Testing confirmed her infection with cyclosporiasis, characterized by debilitating symptoms such as persistent diarrhea, intense pain, and chills.
The lawsuit further details O’Hara’s difficulties in managing the illness due to an allergy to the standard medication for treating cyclospora. Compounding the issue, a suitable alternative medication has been unavailable due to a back order. While she has been discharged from the hospital, her recovery is reportedly incomplete.
Efforts by Michigan Public to obtain reactions from the involved parties, Border Foods LLC and Taylor Farms, remain unanswered.
The state health department’s latest update reveals that the outbreak of cyclosporiasis has affected over 10,000 residents in Michigan, with nearly 200 requiring hospitalization.
