Steris plc Expands to North Carolina: A Major Boost to Lee County’s Economy

In a significant development for Lee County, North Carolina, STERIS plc (NYSE: STE), a prominent figure in the healthcare sector, plans to create 335 jobs with a $600 million investment in a new Chemistries Manufacturing Center of Excellence in Sanford. This move underscores North Carolina’s growing reputation in the life sciences industry.

Governor Josh Stein emphasized the importance of this investment, noting, “STERIS is making a major investment in North Carolina, which reinforces our state’s reputation as a powerhouse in the life sciences industry. Decades of excellence in manufacturing and innovation have developed the world-class talent, research, and supply chain that continues to attract global companies and drive long-term economic growth across our state.”

Established in 1985, STERIS is a global leader in infection prevention products and services, employing over 18,000 individuals across approximately 250 locations worldwide. The new Sanford facility will span 600,000 square feet, featuring advanced manufacturing, research and development (R&D), laboratory, warehouse, and distribution capabilities.

Dan Carestio, President and CEO of STERIS, shared insights into the decision-making process: “After extensive analysis of our existing facilities and Customer demand, we have decided to make a significant investment in the United States to support our long-term global growth. Creating a formulated chemistries Center of Excellence will allow us to accelerate innovation, expand capacity and optimize our U.S. chemistries manufacturing and distribution network. Our Customers save lives every day, and with this investment we will be well positioned to support their needs for years to come.”

The average annual salary for the new jobs is expected to be $68,704, surpassing Lee County’s average of $59,903, potentially generating an annual payroll impact exceeding $23 million.

This expansion is supported by a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) approved by the state’s Economic Investment Committee. The 12-year grant is projected to amplify the state economy by $1.8 billion, with a potential reimbursement to STERIS of up to $3,213,000, contingent on performance verification.

North Carolina Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley highlighted the strategic importance of this development: “STERIS’ decision to make its Center of Excellence in Lee County affirms the region’s emergence as a premier hub for advanced manufacturing. Guided by our First in Opportunity strategic plan, North Carolina is strengthening our competitive advantage by investing in workforce development, fostering innovative partnerships that meet industry needs, and creating the conditions for companies like STERIS to succeed and generate strong returns on their investment.”

With a projected return on investment of 325%, the JDIG ensures a positive net tax revenue for the state. Additionally, STERIS’s choice of Lee County, classified as a Tier 2 area by the state’s economic tier system, will result in up to $357,000 being channeled into the state’s Industrial Development Fund – Utility Account, facilitating infrastructure improvements in rural regions.

Senator Jim Burgin expressed enthusiasm for the development, stating, “We are proud to welcome STERIS to Lee County. This landmark investment and expansion mark an exciting new chapter for both the company and our community, creating opportunities for shared growth and long-term economic prosperity. Healthcare and healthcare costs are two areas I am passionate about. I am looking forward to STERIS helping with both.”

Representative John Sauls echoed the sentiments, highlighting the significance for the region: “This is exceptional news for our region and the entire state of North Carolina. STERIS’ decision to invest in Sanford speaks volumes about the strength of our community, workforce, and business environment. We’re proud to welcome them as the newest member of our thriving corporate community.”

Key partners in the project include the North Carolina Department of Commerce, Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, and several other state and local agencies, underscoring a collaborative effort to bolster economic growth in Lee County.
