Yousef Rabhi Unseats Longtime Mayor in Ann Arbor’s Primary Election
Yousef Rabhi, a Washtenaw County Commissioner, has emerged victorious over Ann Arbor’s sitting mayor, Chris Taylor, in a decisive primary election held on Tuesday. Taylor, known for his progressive stance, has led the city for 12 years, working with a unified city council to introduce high-rise buildings and implement a contentious rezoning plan aimed at increasing housing density.
Rabhi, aligning with Democratic Socialist ideals, campaigned on local dissatisfaction regarding these changes, promoting a platform focused on community empowerment and opposing corporate influence.
During his campaign, Taylor highlighted his achievements, including balanced budgets, improved city services, expanded affordable housing, and increased housing density to reduce living costs in the area.
Despite Rabhi’s successful campaign, only one of the four city council candidates he supported won their race. Incumbents Jenn Cornell (Ward 5) and Cynthia Harrison (Ward 1), who backed high-rise developments, retained their seats. Aiden Sova (Ward 4) and Sandy Aldrich (Ward 2), both endorsed by Taylor, were also elected.
Ryan Bartholomew, Rabhi’s sole successful endorsee, secured a city council seat in Ward 3.
With Ann Arbor being predominantly Democratic, Rabhi is poised for a likely victory in the upcoming general election. However, he will face a city council largely composed of Taylor supporters.
In his statement following the election, Rabhi expressed that “the people of Ann Arbor sent a message. We are ready to fight for a better tomorrow. We are ready to embrace a vision of the future that works for the many, not just the few.”
Rabhi thanked his supporters, saying, “I want to thank each and every person who made phone calls, knocked doors, or talked to their friends about this race. This community is incredible. And I am confident that, whether or not you voted for me, our city will unite together in the face of the enormous obstacles facing us.”
He further emphasized Ann Arbor’s commitment to standing against federal overreach and inequality: “Ann Arbor will unapologetically stand up to Trump’s federal overreach and protect our neighbors against ICE. We will push back against rising inequality to make sure that every worker, neighbor, and community member who wants to make their home here can. We will step into our role as a regional leader and redefine what is possible.”
Outgoing Mayor Taylor expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, stating, “While the outcome of this election wasn’t what we hoped for, I couldn’t be prouder of the campaign we ran. We led with honesty, integrity, and an optimistic vision for Ann Arbor’s future, and I will always be grateful to everyone who joined us in that effort.”
He further acknowledged the efforts of his supporters: “To everyone who volunteered, donated, put up a yard sign, knocked on doors, made phone calls, attended events, offered an endorsement, or shared words of encouragement: thank you. Your support, your generosity, and your belief in our campaign have meant more to me than I can adequately express.”
