John James Announces Lieutenant Governor Pick for Michigan Race
In a strategic move for the Michigan gubernatorial race, Republican candidate John James has unveiled his choice for lieutenant governor. State Representative Jay DeBoyer from Clay Township has been selected to join James on the ticket.
John James, known for his service as a second-term Congressman for Michigan’s 10th District, emphasized the qualities DeBoyer brings to the table. In a tweet, James highlighted, “Jay embodies the West Point Honor Code principles I expect in my administration: restoring integrity, competence, and trust in state government.”
DeBoyer, who currently chairs the Michigan House Oversight Committee, has a background as St. Clair County clerk. His selection is praised by Republican strategist Kristin Combs, who noted, “As a former clerk, he can talk to that. I think chairing the Oversight Committee, he’s gotten a really good glimpse into the administration and maybe some things we’re looking – Republicans are looking – to improve on.”
Under DeBoyer’s leadership, the House Oversight Committee has been active, questioning leaders of various state departments, including Michigan State Police Lt. Col. James Grady and state health department director Elizabeth Hertel. This role could play a crucial part in the upcoming election, where DeBoyer will need approval at the August 22 Republican Party convention to officially become the lieutenant governor nominee.
This selection marks a significant moment, as it could be the first time in decades that Republicans have not nominated a woman for a major statewide office in Michigan. DeBoyer’s proximity to James’ metro-Detroit district may raise concerns about appealing to voters statewide, but Combs dismissed such worries, stating, “Identity politics doesn’t really matter. What you’re looking for is who’s going to help you accomplish your agenda.”
While the Republican camp is confident in DeBoyer’s capabilities, Democrats have voiced criticisms, pointing to his alignment with former President Donald Trump. Notably, state Rep. Penelope Tsernoglou from East Lansing expressed concerns, accusing DeBoyer of being uncooperative and stating, “He likes to attack Democratic elected officials. That will probably be his role as the candidate for lieutenant governor.”
On the Democratic side, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has not yet announced her running mate. However, names such as state Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks, state Senate Appropriations Chair Sarah Anthony, and former state Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich have been considered as potential candidates.
