Endangered California Condors Set to Soar Again in the West
The majestic California condor, North America’s largest flying bird, is poised for a significant moment in its conservation journey. Later this month, four condors will be reintroduced into the wild at the scenic Arizona-Utah border.
These birds, nurtured through a strategic captive breeding initiative, aim to strengthen the wild population by enhancing genetic diversity. The Arizona Game and Fish Department, along with its collaborators, will oversee this release at the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument in a public event scheduled for late September. Current estimates from 2022 indicate there are roughly 116 condors in the Arizona-Utah flock.
The upcoming release event will not only draw spectators to the condor viewing site but will also be broadcasted live on the Peregrine Fund’s YouTube channel, allowing a broader audience to witness this critical conservation effort.
