Doctors Criticize Andy Biggs’ Medicaid Stance as Arizona Governorship Race Heats Up

In a heated political climate, approximately 50 healthcare professionals, including doctors, have voiced strong opposition to GOP Congressman Andy Biggs’ long-standing position on Medicaid. This opposition comes as Biggs campaigns against Democratic incumbent Katie Hobbs for the governorship.

The efforts to gather signatures for a letter criticizing Biggs were coordinated by the Copper State Victory’s campaign, which supports Hobbs. The letter highlights Biggs’ history, including a 2011 bill he sponsored as Arizona Senate Majority Leader, which aimed to dismantle the state’s Medicaid program, the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System. Back in 2014, during his tenure as president of the state senate, Biggs strongly opposed the expansion of Medicaid. His advocacy for Medicaid cuts continued into his congressional career, notably in the H.R. 1, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, last year. In an interview with One America News, Biggs articulated his stance, stating, “You got some people that wanna get more cuts, I agree with the more cut approach… We have a massive spending program.”

Further clarifying his position, Biggs, in a video statement, credited the Freedom Caucus for advocating over a trillion dollars in reductions in the bill, targeting what he described as Medicaid-related money laundering schemes.

The healthcare professionals’ letter condemns Biggs’ Medicaid track record as “disqualifying” and warns of dire consequences for Arizona’s healthcare infrastructure, including the potential closure of hospitals and health clinics. “For us, these are not just votes on a page. We see the consequences in our hospitals, clinics, and exam rooms,” the letter asserts. The letter also notes the closure of a Tucson hospital and eight local health clinics, with eight rural hospitals at risk.

As the state braces for Medicaid cuts set to take effect by year’s end, the debate over healthcare policy remains a pivotal issue in the gubernatorial race.
