Democrats Criticize Trump Administration’s Approach to 2026 Elections
In a significant political development, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly and over two dozen Democratic colleagues have raised concerns regarding the Trump administration’s handling of the 2026 midterm elections. The group has expressed alarm over actions they believe could erode public trust in the democratic process and disenfranchise eligible voters.
The letter, addressed to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, criticizes the lack of assurance that ICE and Border Patrol will not be deployed to voting polls, a move that would contravene federal law. Additionally, the senators demand evidence for a previous claim stating that 250,000 non-citizens were registered to vote across four states.
This letter follows claims by a DHS whistleblower regarding a voter fraud initiative that allegedly involved verifying individuals’ immigration statuses through questionable means. This initiative reportedly used sensitive personal information and included impersonating voters to access registration sites, potentially breaching state laws.
The senators are urging Secretary Mullin to cease this initiative and substantiate the voter fraud allegations. Their letter states, “The 2026 midterm elections are already underway. Your unsubstantiated allegations of noncitizen voter fraud, public recitation of unreliable data, and unwarranted conditioning of continued grant funding for state election security measures on compliance with politically motivated requests for voter data appear to be calculated efforts to undermine confidence in our elections and risks wrongly disenfranchising voters.”
In response, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security refuted the claims of exerting increased federal control over the elections, labeling such notions as “totally false.” The spokesperson clarified that ICE does not plan operations targeting polling locations, emphasizing that any enforcement actions are intelligence-driven and focused on public safety threats.
Despite the concerns raised, the agency has yet to provide evidence for the claim of 250,000 non-U.S. citizens registered to vote or explain why such information has not been disclosed publicly.
