This story is part of KNAU’s series Unmapped Route 66, which chronicles the people and places of the Mother Road’s past and present during its centennial year.

As Route 66 marks its centennial, a fresh documentary by filmmaker John Paget brings the storied highway back into focus, highlighting a vibrant resurgence. Paget’s latest project, “Route 66: The Main Street of America,” explores the revitalization efforts along the historic road.

A New Generation Breathes Life into Route 66

John Paget, in conversation with KNAU’s Chris Clements, shared insights into his motivation for creating another documentary centered on Route 66. Paget noted the emergence of a new generation dedicated to restoring landmarks and businesses along the highway. “I think what’s changed is that there’s a new generation of people living and working along the highway who are pouring their lives and their hearts into restoring different landmarks and legacy businesses along the highway,” Paget explained.

Stories of Transformation and Renewal

Paget highlighted several standout stories from his filming journey. In Tucumcari, New Mexico, individuals who transitioned from corporate careers have revitalized motels like the Roadrunner Lodge and the Blue Swallow Motel. Meanwhile, Holbrook, Arizona, hosts Atsuo, a sake maker crafting some of the finest sake outside Japan. In Kingman, Arizona, two entrepreneurs have transformed a derelict property into Tin Can Alley, featuring renovated Airstream trailers and converted old buildings into a coffee and ice cream shop.

The Legacy of Route 66

Reflecting on his first experience traveling the highway, Paget, originally from the Pacific Northwest, shared his fascination with the road’s revival story rather than nostalgia. He recounted the tale of Seligman, Arizona, and barber Angel Delgadillo, who played a pivotal role in marking Route 66 as historic, sparking its revival. “It started the revival of Route 66, and just the idea that a barber in a small town can change the course of history,” Paget remarked.

Generational Ties and Dedication

Paget emphasized the significance of generational families in sustaining the legacy of Route 66. Their enduring connection to the highway drives many to continue working to preserve its heritage.
