ASU Hockey Coach Disposes of Cell Phone Amidst Heat Stroke Incident Investigation
The ongoing investigation into the collapse of an Arizona State University (ASU) hockey player has taken a new turn. Reports indicate that the head coach, Greg Powers, disposed of his cell phone following death threats he received. This action has raised concerns about the preservation of potential evidence in the case.
Attorney Leonard Aragon, representing the family of 21-year-old Matthew Mayich, who suffered a severe heat stroke, has addressed this issue in a communication to ASU’s general counsel. Aragon stated that Coach Powers was using the phone for “work purposes” on the day Mayich collapsed and was legally obligated to maintain any evidence on it.
The letter from Aragon emphasizes the potential loss of crucial information, stating, “The problem we have with that is you don’t have to replace your phone, you can replace your phone number, and by replacing the phone, you potentially lose a lot of evidence that may be relevant to this case.”
As a result of these developments, ASU has placed Coach Powers on administrative leave. Meanwhile, Mayich remains hospitalized after sustaining a catastrophic brain injury during a military-style training session nearly two months ago.
Further actions are being pursued by Mayich’s family, with their attorney requesting the Maricopa County attorney to initiate an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident during the outdoor practice session.
