Michigan Faith Leaders Urge Civility Amid Heated 2026 Election Season

The Call for Civility Amid Michigan’s Tense Election Season

As the 2026 midterm elections come to a close, Michigan is witnessing a push for respect and understanding amidst a highly charged political environment. In a bid to promote harmony, faith leaders in Michigan are urging residents to engage with neighbors of differing political views in a respectful manner.

This election cycle, characterized by intense rhetoric and partisanship, has prompted Reverend Kristin Stroble of East Lansing, along with other Christian pastors, to advocate for civility. They emphasize the importance of maintaining shared humanity over political divisions.

“Our differences and political opinions do not overshadow our shared humanity, and the commandment to treat our neighbors with love and respect,” Reverend Stroble stated.

The appeal for civility extends particularly to the treatment of election day poll workers, who play a crucial role in the democratic process. Clerks are currently managing the influx of voters, as a significant portion of Michigan’s electorate has already engaged in early voting.

According to the Michigan Secretary of State voting dashboard, by Friday morning, 1,858,624 or 25.1% of eligible voters in Michigan had cast their ballots. Of these, 436,161 utilized early in-person voting, with Sunday marking the last opportunity for this option.

The midterm ballots are packed with critical decisions, including races for the governor’s office, a U.S. Senate seat, and various congressional and state legislative positions. Additionally, voters are tasked with deciding on multiple ballot questions, bond issues, and millages.
