In a significant political shift, Democrat Troy Jackson has unseated Republican Sen. Susan Collins in Maine’s closely watched Senate race.

Collins, a political fixture in Maine for three decades, faced formidable challenges this election cycle. Her longstanding ability to win in a state that leans Democratic during national elections was undermined by several factors, including the unpopularity of the Republican president, economic concerns, and allegations of her involvement in a corrupt scheme.

Jackson, who entered politics after working as a logger, focused his campaign on addressing cost-of-living issues, a message that resonated with voters. During his early morning victory speech, he emphasized his connection with working-class concerns.

“If you’re watching this after getting home from a shift, or sitting at the table wondering how you’re going to pay the next bill, I want you to hear something very clearly,” Jackson stated. “You are sending somebody to Washington who knows exactly what that feels like.”

With nearly all ballots counted by Wednesday, Jackson had achieved 54% of the vote.

Another critical issue impacting Collins was her controversial 2018 decision to support Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination. Although a pro-choice Republican, her vote became contentious after Kavanaugh played a pivotal role in overturning Roe v. Wade in 2022.

In a written statement, Collins expressed gratitude for her service, saying, “It has been the honor of my life to serve the people of Maine in the United States Senate. I’m proud of all I have been able to accomplish for our state and for our country in the past 30 years. I called Troy Jackson tonight to congratulate him and to assure him that my staff and I will work to ensure a smooth transition.”

Despite the anticipation, Collins did not address her supporters who had gathered at a Bangor watch party, remaining absent until the early hours of the morning.
