Horton Fire Burns Over 1,000 Acres as Crews Battle Across Mogollon Rim

The Horton Fire, a human-induced wildfire, has expanded significantly along the Mogollon Rim northeast of Payson, now covering more than 1,000 acres. Over the weekend, the blaze spread by approximately 150 acres to the east and south, though containment efforts have maintained a steady 17% control.

The Tonto National Forest officials noted heightened fire activity particularly around Promontory Point, as the fire advanced east and south from that location and east of Horton Springs.

Fire crews spent Sunday patrolling the affected areas, reinforcing handlines and bulldozer lines to inhibit further spread. On Monday, teams planned to implement targeted firing operations to secure key routes including Forest Road 300 and Forest Road 76, as well as other areas deemed at risk.

A community meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, located at 546 W. Ashby Apple Dr., Payson, to keep the public informed.

The communities of Tonto Creek Estates, Tonto Christian Camp, Tonto Fish Hatchery, and Zane Grey Cabins remain under SET evacuation status, urging residents to be prepared for possible evacuation. Authorities advise the public to avoid the vicinity of the fire for their safety.

Smoke from the Horton Fire is expected to be visible in nearby areas for an extended period, raising concerns for air quality among residents.
