Arizona State University Celebrates Record-Breaking Graduation
Arizona State University marked a significant milestone on May 12, as over 21,000 students graduated, making it the largest commencement in the university’s history. This event underscored ASU’s growing reputation as an educational powerhouse.
Among the graduates was Abigail Zagala, a remarkable 14-year-old who earned her bachelor’s degree in social and behavioral sciences. While most teenagers her age are entering high school, Zagala’s academic journey has already propelled her to college graduation.
Starting from an early age, Zagala exhibited exceptional academic abilities. She began reading before she was two, tackled college-level algebra at eight, and completed her high school coursework by 11. “For the algebra, I was actually on ASU’s Universal Learner program,” Zagala shared. The university’s West campus in Peoria provided the perfect setting for her to continue her education while staying close to home.
Abigail’s story is intertwined with ASU, as her father is an alumnus, and family photos show her in Sun Devils gear as a toddler. With her sights now set on a legal career, she plans to attend law school, inspired by her grandfather’s service in the U.S. Air Force. “He protected people’s rights, and I want to do that too — just in a slightly different way as a human rights lawyer,” she expressed.
Zagala has already been accepted into several prestigious law schools and has received a full scholarship from one of her top selections, setting the stage for the next chapter in her extraordinary academic journey.
