Power Outages Implemented in Flagstaff Amidst High Fire Risk

As wildfire threats loom large, Arizona Public Service (APS) has taken proactive measures by temporarily cutting power in parts of the Flagstaff region. This decision affects approximately 6,000 customers in specific high-risk fire zones.

The areas impacted by this outage include:

  • Doney Park
  • Timberline
  • Fernwood
  • Mormon Lake
  • Cosnino
  • Sunset Crater
  • Walnut Canyon
  • Valle
  • Various sites in and around Grand Canyon National Park, with the exception of Grand Canyon Village

APS anticipates the power shutoff will last between 12 and 24 hours. These preventive measures aim to avoid electrical equipment from sparking or exacerbating wildfires, especially with wind gusts predicted to reach up to 60 miles per hour near critical infrastructure. Such weather conditions, combined with dry terrain, significantly elevate the fire risk.

The utility company has coordinated efforts with meteorologists and fire mitigation specialists to monitor the situation closely. The timeline for restoring power is contingent upon weather conditions, and APS may cancel outages if conditions improve favorably.

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for much of northeastern Arizona, particularly affecting the Navajo Nation and Little Colorado River Valley, underscoring the seriousness of the fire threat.

Residents affected by the power outage can seek assistance at the Murdoch Community Center in Flagstaff, which will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Here, individuals can obtain more information, charge medical devices or phones, and refrigerate medications.
