Arizona Supreme Court Justice Selection Moves Forward with Nominee Recommendations

The process of selecting a new justice for the Arizona Supreme Court has entered a crucial phase as the commission responsible for nominations has put forward five candidates for Governor Katie Hobbs’ consideration.

Among the nominees for the vacant seat, three hail from the populous Maricopa County, while the remaining two are from Pima and Yuma counties. This decision means that none of the nominees are from northern Arizona, leaving Justice Robert Brutinel’s Prescott seat without a local successor.

Currently, all six members of the Arizona Supreme Court are from Maricopa County, a fact that highlights the ongoing conversation about regional representation within the state’s highest court. Although the Commission on Appellate Court Appointments is encouraged to reflect the state’s diverse demographics in its recommendations, there is no formal mandate enforcing this consideration.

Governor Hobbs now faces the task of selecting one of these five qualified individuals to serve on the Supreme Court, a decision that will shape the future of Arizona’s judicial landscape.
