Health Officials Confirm New Measles Cases in Coconino County
Health authorities in Coconino County have reported two additional cases of measles, prompting efforts to alert individuals who may have been exposed to the virus during specific dates earlier this month.
Residents and visitors to the area are advised to be cautious if they were present at the following venues during the specified times:
- Em’s Café (623 S. Main St., Fredonia, Arizona): April 6, 2026, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Individuals should monitor for symptoms until April 27.
- Kane County Hospital (355 N Main St., Kanab, Utah): April 13, 2026, from 12:30 a.m. to 4 a.m. Symptoms could appear as late as May 4.
Measles symptoms can manifest between one to three weeks after exposure. Those who suspect they have been in contact with infected individuals should be vigilant for signs such as fever, congestion, rashes, or red and watery eyes for up to 21 days.
It’s crucial for anyone exhibiting these symptoms to self-isolate and seek medical advice from a healthcare provider, urgent care, or hospital.
These new cases bring the total number of confirmed measles cases in the county to four this year.
Arizona has witnessed a significant increase in measles cases over the past year, largely due to an ongoing outbreak near the Arizona-Utah border that began in August. According to the Arizona Department of Health Services, there have been 281 cases from 2025 through April 20.
Measles, a highly contagious viral respiratory illness, can be particularly dangerous for infants and young children. Approximately 90% of those unvaccinated will contract the virus upon exposure. Healthcare professionals recommend two doses of the MMR vaccine for effective protection against measles.
Individuals are encouraged to contact their healthcare providers or reach out to the Coconino County Health and Human Services Health and Wellness Clinic at 928-679-7222 to arrange for an MMR vaccination.
A new Arizona law expands death benefits for first responders. It’s partly inspired by the death of DPS pilot Robert Skankey, who died in a helicopter crash while responding to a Flagstaff shooting.
