Mike Rogers Aims to Reclaim Michigan Senate Seat After 32 Years

In a move that energizes Michigan’s political landscape, former Congressman Mike Rogers expressed his determination to reclaim a U.S. Senate seat for the Republicans after more than three decades. Speaking to enthusiastic supporters in Lansing, Rogers emphasized his commitment to Michigan’s working families.

Rogers made this declaration as he submitted numerous petitions to secure a spot on the August primary ballot at the Michigan Secretary of State office. His political career includes seven terms in Congress beginning in 2001, ending with his departure in 2015. He narrowly lost a Senate race to Democrat Elissa Slotkin in 2024.

When questioned about his improved prospects in the current race to succeed the retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters, Rogers dismissed predictions of a challenging election cycle for Republicans. He highlighted the unique opportunity presented by concurrent open races for both governor and U.S. Senate in Michigan this November.

“There is an energy in this state that is not midterm-like,” Rogers stated, emphasizing the distinct political dynamics in Michigan that he believes pundits are overlooking.

In the Republican primary this August, Rogers will compete against lesser-known candidates. Should he win, he will face the victor from a crowded Democratic field in November. The Democratic contenders include U.S. Representative Haley Stevens, State Senator Mallory McMorrow, and public health advocate Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, all of whom are neck-and-neck in recent polls.
