Arizona’s Attorney General Seeks More Funds to Combat School-Voucher Fraud
Arizona’s education funding system faces a significant challenge, as Attorney General Kris Mayes has highlighted the need for increased resources to tackle school-voucher fraud. During a press conference on Thursday, Mayes urged the state Legislature to allocate more funds to her office and the Department of Education to enhance their capacity to investigate and prosecute abuses related to Empowerment Scholarship Accounts (ESAs).
Mayes emphasized the ongoing nature of the issue, stating, “I will continue to do these prosecutions for as long as I have to, but it’s going to be like playing whack-a-mole with these fraudsters.” Her remarks underscore the difficulties in keeping up with fraudulent activities within the ESA program.
In a recent case, two individuals were indicted for allegedly obtaining over $100,000 from the ESA program through fraudulent claims for more than 40 non-existent children. This case illustrates the scope and severity of the problem that Mayes and her office are dealing with.
