Lawmakers Unite to Protect America’s Wild Horses and Burros
In a significant move to safeguard the nation’s wild horses and burros, a coalition of bipartisan lawmakers, including two prominent figures from Arizona, has established the Congressional Wild Horse Caucus. This newly formed assembly is dedicated to addressing concerns surrounding the protection and preservation of these iconic animals.
Representatives Juan Ciscomani and David Schweikert, both hailing from Arizona, have taken on the roles of co-chairs in this initiative. Their mission is to spearhead efforts that ensure the welfare of wild horses and burros throughout the United States.
Congressman Ciscomani, who has been actively engaged in this cause since before his tenure in Congress, emphasized the importance of this issue. “I learned a lot more about it when I got into Congress, but even when I was with the state of Arizona, this was an issue that Governor Ducey also got very involved in. So that was the first time that I was exposed to it on the policy side of it,” he explained.
Highlighting the bipartisan nature of the initiative, Ciscomani remarked, “It is fascinating to me to see the diversity of support that this issue and the policies here have. So I’m hoping that we can get a good number of people from all over the country and all over the political spectrum to join us.”
The caucus has outlined several strategies aimed at addressing the challenges faced by wild horses and burros. Key proposals include habitat preservation and the implementation of humane fertility control measures.
This legislative effort comes in response to rising public concern over mass helicopter roundups and the increasing numbers of these animals being held in government facilities. The caucus aims to provide a platform for developing sustainable solutions.
