Flight Prices Set to Rise Amid Shifting Travel Trends

The landscape of air travel is undergoing significant changes, with the cost of flying expected to climb despite currently low domestic airfare rates. Shifts in international travel patterns, influenced by tariffs and foreign tensions, are key factors driving this trend.

CBS travel editor Peter Greenberg highlights the impact of these shifts: “If people make the decision to not fly overseas and they’re going to travel within the 48 continental United States, that means the law of supply and demand kicks in. More planes will be full, airfares are gonna go up.”

Data from the U.S. Travel Association indicates a 14% drop in international travel to the United States since March. Greenberg explains that while these travelers are choosing destinations other than the U.S., they are not abandoning international travel altogether.

Currently, airlines are offering attractive deals for domestic travel, but Greenberg warns these are temporary. “Right now you are seeing a little bit of a buyer’s market,” he notes. “They are doing that as they try to adjust to the changes of incoming traffic overseas.”

As airfares are poised to rise, Greenberg suggests that declining gas prices might encourage more travelers to drive instead of fly. Additionally, cruise lines may begin offering promotions in the upcoming weeks to attract customers.

According to Greenberg, once airlines adjust their schedules or reduce aircraft sizes on certain routes, airfare prices will increase. He advises travelers to secure their travel plans promptly. “Every day that you delay, airfares can go up about 4%,” Greenberg cautions. “So procrastination does have a consequence.”
