Firefighters Brace Against Fierce Winds in Battle with Pocket Fire
As the Pocket Fire continues to rage north of Sedona, crews are gearing up for another challenging day as intense winds threaten the containment lines they’ve established.
In recent days, firefighters have focused their efforts on constructing fire lines along Forest Road 231. Despite the challenging conditions on Friday, where the fire advanced up to three-quarters of a mile, these lines have so far withstood the fierce winds, which reached close to 60 miles per hour.
By Saturday morning, the fire had consumed 2,114 acres with no containment achieved yet. A total of 856 personnel are actively engaged in the firefighting efforts, though the fire’s origin remains unknown.
Saturday is expected to be the peak of the three-day red flag warning, with crews on high alert for spot fires, especially along FR 231 and to the north. No new controlled burns are planned, and the high winds may restrict aerial firefighting support.
The forecast predicts sustained winds of 25 miles per hour, with gusts potentially reaching 45 miles per hour. Coupled with low humidity and temperatures soaring into the 80s and 90s, the conditions remain volatile.
Smoke is expected to drift over Kachina Village and Flagstaff through the weekend, posing health risks particularly to sensitive groups. While the average air quality is anticipated to be unhealthy, shifts in wind patterns could rapidly alter conditions. Areas located south of the fire are likely to experience better air quality.
A community meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday, June 29, at Red Rock Middle and High School in Sedona. The session will also be available via live stream on the Coconino National Forest Facebook page.
Due to the high risk of wildfire, Arizona Public Service Co. initiated a public safety power shutoff on Saturday morning. Cooling centers, along with water and ice distribution points, have been set up in Flagstaff, Grand Canyon National Park, and other locations.
