Flagstaff Faces Setback with Loss of Federal Grant for Emergency Preparedness

Flagstaff’s efforts to bolster emergency preparedness have encountered a significant obstacle following the Trump administration’s decision to withdraw a $1 million grant. This funding loss impacts the city’s ability to equip community centers for crises such as wildfires and floods.

The grant, initially provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency using funds from the Inflation Reduction Act, was revoked on May 31. The agency explained that the grant no longer aligns with its current priorities. More details can be found in the official announcement.

Expressing concern over the decision, Flagstaff Mayor Becky Daggett stated that the city has lodged a formal appeal. She remarked, “I’m just really hoping that they’ll see the importance of emergency management preparedness and see that this action puts Flagstaff and all of Northern Arizona at risk.”

The rescinded funds were earmarked for critical upgrades in three community centers, including installing WiFi, backup generators, and heating and cooling systems to ensure residents’ safety during emergencies. Additionally, the funding cut has resulted in the elimination of four staff positions dedicated to these efforts.
