Grand Canyon Trails Reopen With New Precautions Post-Floods
In the wake of severe flash floods that struck in August, the National Park Service has lifted restrictions on several hiking trails within the Grand Canyon. However, this reopening comes with new advisories for those planning to explore the park’s rugged inner terrain.
Hikers can now access parts of the Bright Angel, South Kaibab, Plateau Point, and Tonto trails. Despite these reopenings, significant closures remain in place. The North Kaibab Trail, along with the Black and Silver Bridges over the Colorado River and Phantom Ranch, are still off-limits due to substantial damage. Visitors caught in these restricted zones face citations.
The Park Service has issued a crucial reminder: during the winter months, water stations typically found at three rest areas will be unavailable. This change requires hikers to carry their own water and filtration systems. Additionally, they should be prepared for potential delays and unforeseen trail closures as repairs continue.
