Untreated Sewage Spill Affects Oak Creek in Sedona
Over the weekend, Sedona faced an environmental challenge when an estimated 1,000 to 5,000 gallons of untreated sewage spilled into Oak Creek. The incident, reported by city officials, occurred on Sunday evening.
The Public Works Wastewater Division was alerted to the overflow at a commercial area along State Route 179 at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. An investigation revealed that a grease blockage at a local restaurant was likely responsible for causing untreated sewage to escape from a manhole, subsequently entering a storm drain that led to the creek.
By 7:30 p.m., city crews managed to halt the spill and proceeded with decontamination efforts in the affected area.
According to a city statement, water quality tests are underway, with results expected to be released once available. The city also intends to inform residents and businesses in the vicinity about the spill on Monday morning.
