In a development that intertwines mystery with the history of organized crime, Las Vegas authorities are set to disclose the identity of a man whose body was discovered in a Lake Mead barrel. This intriguing find by boaters in 2022 has rekindled memories of the city’s notorious mob era.
The body, which surfaced during a period of declining water levels in Lake Mead, has been linked to the mob’s infamous methods of disposing of their targets. The Las Vegas police plan to hold a press conference to provide details about the man, who investigators believe was killed between the mid-1970s and early 1980s, inferred from the style of shoes found on him. It has been confirmed that the individual was shot.
At the time of his death, the man was dressed in a button-down short-sleeve shirt, light blue jeans, a silver wristwatch, and blue-and-white tennis shoes.
The water level at Lake Mead has been dropping and is down to about 30% of capacity. On the receding shoreline, authorities found a body that had been stuffed inside a metal barrel. There may be a Las Vegas mob connection. → Hear more stories from The Show
Lake Mead’s water levels have reached historic lows due to several factors, including overuse, a longstanding drought, and rising temperatures. The diminishing reservoir, which dates back 90 years, has exposed previously submerged areas, leading experts to speculate that more bodies could be uncovered.
A subsequent discovery by a KLAS-TV news crew revealed a second barrel near the first, though it was empty. Shortly after, paddleboarders found human remains on a newly exposed sandbar, but investigations ruled out any foul play. Another set of human remains was found in August with similar conclusions by the police.
Lake Mead, along with Lake Powell upstream, comprises the most extensive artificial reservoirs in the United States. This system distributes Colorado River water to over 40 million users, including residents, agriculture, and industries spanning Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, and parts of Mexico.
In 2022, as water levels continued to drop, Las Vegas’s uppermost intake for drinking water was exposed. This prompted the regional water authority to utilize a deep-lake intake built in 2020, ensuring the continued supply of water to the city’s 2.4 million residents, visitors, casinos, and suburbs. Las Vegas sees approximately 40 million tourists annually.
