In a bid to enhance fire safety and forest conservation, Little America Hotel is set to restrict public entry to its expansive Flagstaff property. The scenic 530-acre site, frequently visited for outdoor activities and often used by homeless campers, is now under scrutiny due to escalating fire threats.
The hotel management cites recent fire incidents and environmental degradation as primary reasons for the decision. According to Tony O’Brien, Vice President of Operations for Little America, “Just over the past month or so, there’s been a couple of fires that have broken out just south of our property, which I think really caused us to say, ‘Hey, maybe we need to move a little bit quicker on this timeline.'”
These fires, reportedly ignited by uncontrolled campfires from homeless individuals, have prompted swift action. In response, the hotel has implemented fencing and signage to demarcate private property and deter unauthorized access.
Additionally, managers plan to shut down several informal trails in the upcoming month to further safeguard the area. Despite these measures, a section of the Arizona National Scenic Trail passing through the property will remain accessible.
