New Animal Shelter to Open in Glendale as Part of West Valley Expansion
Maricopa County is taking significant steps to address the needs of the growing West Valley community by constructing a new animal care facility in Glendale. This project marks an important development for the region, promising enhanced services for both animals and residents.
Construction is underway for a 94,000-square-foot animal shelter, set to open its doors in May 2028. This state-of-the-art center will feature 600 kennels, providing ample space and resources for animal care. As the West Valley experiences a population boom, the new facility is poised to meet the increasing demand for animal services.
Debbie Lesko, Vice Chair of the County Board of Supervisors, emphasized the strategic placement of the shelter. “The West Valley is booming. There’s tons of jobs coming up over here, but also a lot of families moving here,” Lesko noted. “So this is a logical place to build a new animal shelter because people love their pets, and I would love for them to adopt them here from Maricopa County.”
Debbie McKnight, Director of Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, highlighted the facility’s role in ensuring animal welfare. “Great, nice big kennel. So we have proper housing for all the dogs. We have enough play yards. We’re putting in a low stimulation housing area for our shy and fearful dogs,” she explained. The inclusion of a maternity ward for dogs with litters further underscores the comprehensive approach to animal care at the new shelter.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by Maricopa County to invest in the West Valley, reflecting the region’s growing importance and the county’s commitment to its development.
