Mesa Public Schools Announce Layoffs Amidst Significant Enrollment Decline

Facing a notable reduction in student numbers, Mesa Public Schools, Arizona’s largest school district, is implementing immediate and future staff reductions.

This week, the district laid off approximately 42 certified staff members. Looking forward, they plan to cut an additional 147 positions, including three administrative roles, before the start of the next academic year.

According to the district, these measures are prompted by a decrease of about 1,500 students in the current school year and a projected drop of 1,800 more for 2025-26. This downturn in enrollment is leading to a significant reduction in funding from both state and federal sources, necessitating a budget cut of nearly $17 million.

The district is adopting a new funding approach aimed at prioritizing support for schools serving economically disadvantaged students. This model seeks to ensure that students facing poverty receive comparable opportunities to those of their peers.

Currently, nearly 90% of the district’s budget is allocated to employee compensation. The district’s FY26 budget sheet underscores their ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality education and support for every student.

The enrollment decline has impacted all grade levels, with no schools in the Mesa district currently operating at full capacity.
