Mexico Introduces App for Migrants to Signal Potential Detention

In a move to enhance the safety of Mexican nationals residing in the United States, Mexico has introduced a new cellphone application. This app is specifically designed for migrants to notify their consulate if they anticipate an imminent detention by U.S. immigration authorities.

The app features an “Alert Button,” a critical component that serves as an emergency notification tool. With a single tap, Mexican migrants can alert their consulate about potential detention scenarios.

Juan Ramón de la Fuente, Mexico’s foreign affairs secretary, unveiled the app as part of broader efforts to prepare for possible mass deportations expected in the coming year under the administration of President-elect Donald Trump.

“This permits us to be notified from the moment someone perceives imminent risk that they could be detained,” de la Fuente explained. The app is currently being tested on a limited scale and has shown promising results.

The Mexican government estimates that there are approximately 5 million undocumented Mexican nationals residing in the United States, highlighting the app’s potential reach and impact.
