Mohave County Board Halts Controversial Power Plant Project
Amid rising concerns over environmental and community impact, the Mohave County Board of Supervisors has unanimously decided to halt the development of a planned natural gas power plant in Fort Mohave.
The proposed Mohave Energy Park, which was to span 15 acres, faced significant opposition due to its proximity to the Sunrise Hills neighborhood, being less than half a mile away. Residents feared the project would negatively affect air quality, disrupt desert vistas, and devalue nearby properties.
In addition to local residents, tribal representatives voiced strong opposition to the power plant’s construction, citing potential adverse impacts on their community and land.
The companies involved, Mohave Electric Cooperative and Arizona Electric Power Cooperative, have committed to finding a new location for the project. This relocation effort is not unprecedented, as the facility was initially intended to be built in Mohave Valley, where it also faced public resistance.
As the search for a suitable site continues, the cooperatives are tasked with addressing community concerns and ensuring that future plans align better with local interests.
