In an unprecedented display of unity, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in cities across the United States on Saturday to express discontent with the policies of President Donald Trump. This marked the largest day of protests since Trump’s return to office, driven by a diverse coalition of civil rights, labor, LGBTQ+ groups, and more than 150 organizations under the “Hands Off!” campaign.
The demonstrations, which unfolded in over 1,200 locations encompassing all 50 states, were a peaceful outcry against the administration’s policies on various issues including government downsizing, immigration, and human rights. Notable locations of the protests included the National Mall, Midtown Manhattan, Boston Common, and several state capitols.
In Phoenix, Arizona, protester Liliana Novati voiced her concerns, saying, “They’re hurting everybody in this nation, whether they know it or not, except for the billionaires.” Novati’s sentiments were echoed by many who believe that the administration’s policies disproportionately affect the vulnerable while leaving the wealthy unscathed.
Protesters nationwide criticized the administration’s controversial actions, including the firing of federal workers, closure of Social Security offices, and the deportation of immigrants. Elon Musk, a key figure in these initiatives, has defended them as cost-saving measures.
Emory Webb, another protester, emphasized the importance of recognizing the broader implications of the administration’s actions. “I came here to protest what brought President Donald Trump and Elon Musk to where they’re at,” Webb noted, highlighting a concern for the potential erosion of legal checks and balances.
As the demonstrations continued, speakers at the National Mall, including Democratic lawmakers, condemned the administration’s treatment of the LGBTQ+ community. Kelley Robinson of the Human Rights Campaign stated, “The attacks that we’re seeing, they’re not just political. They are personal, y’all.”
In Phoenix, Liahla Ferra expressed that the protests reflect a collective exhaustion with current policies. “Everybody speaking up, getting out there and saying hands off of everything when it comes to our policies, our children’s medical, Social Security, just all of it,” she said.
Protester Jack Echeverri underscored the protests’ objectives, saying, “I think that the goals of the protests were really to show the discontent that we have with the current administration and how they aren’t listening to the people.”
Despite the overwhelming turnout, the White House maintained its position, with a statement asserting, “President Trump’s position is clear: he will always protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid for eligible beneficiaries.” The statement further accused Democrats of policies that would “bankrupt these programs and crush American seniors.”
For many participants, like Novati, the protests served both as a plea to Democratic leaders to take a stronger stand and as a message to the global community that resistance to the administration’s policies remains strong. “I want the rest of the world to know that we are still gonna fight. We still need to fight. Because we’re not gonna lie down and just let it happen,” she declared.
