Texas Attorney General Probes Health Claims of Michigan Cereal Giant

The spotlight is on a renowned cereal manufacturer as the Texas Attorney General’s office delves into health claims made by the company. The W.K. Kellogg Company, located in Michigan, faces scrutiny over the use of artificial food colorings in its cereals.

Last fall, the company encountered public outcry when demonstrators gathered at its Battle Creek headquarters, urging the company to eliminate artificial colorings from its products. Now, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has confirmed an investigation into whether Kellogg’s health claims are in breach of Texas consumer protection laws.

Paxton emphasized the importance of transparency in his statement, noting, “A critical part of fighting for our children’s future is putting an end to companies’ deceptive practices that are aimed at misleading parents and families about the health of food products.”

The investigation claims that the cereals in question contain artificial food colorings purportedly linked to various health issues such as hyperactivity, obesity, and autoimmune diseases.

Although the company has yet to comment on the Texas investigation, it has previously stated that most of its cereal products do not include artificial colors. Kellogg also asserts that its ingredients meet legal standards and regulations.

In October 2023, Kellogg Company, once a Fortune 500 entity, restructured into two distinct publicly traded companies. WK Kellogg now focuses on the North American cereal brands, including well-known names like Froot Loops and Frosted Flakes. Meanwhile, Kellanova manages the global snacking brands previously under Kellogg.
