Thousands Protest Trump Administration’s 75-Day Policies Across the US

Over a thousand protestors gathered at the Tribal Flag Plaza and the Capitol lawn on Saturday to voice frustrations with the Trump administration. The protest was part of a national movement against policies enacted during the first 75 days of Trump’s presidency. Demonstrators expressed concerns over the mass firing of federal workers, weakening federal agencies, reducing protections for transgender individuals, and increased deportations.

Dubbed the Hands Off! rallies, over 1,200 protests were organized nationwide, as reported by the Associated Press. In Montana, significant turnouts occurred in cities like Billings, Bozeman, and Missoula. The event at the Capitol was organized by Helena’s Waking Giant in conjunction with nationwide groups Indivisible and 50501.

Speakers criticized President Trump’s extensive executive orders, his administration’s handling of crucial issues, and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). DOGE plans to close various federal offices in Montana, further stirring discontent. Recent budget cuts also threaten the state’s arts funding.

Dennis Taylor, a veteran, addressed the crowd, stating, “We stand here today as part of a national mass act in defiance of the Trump-Musk takeover of our democracy.” Sally Brauss, attending from Gallatin Valley, remarked that coming to the Capitol was essential to witness where decisions are made. Montana residents, like those at Rocky Mountain Laboratories, are experiencing the repercussions of government changes, with job cuts and departmental reductions raising concerns.

At the rally, protestors displayed various flags and signs emphasizing democratic values. Chants like “fight back” and “hands off” echoed throughout the event. Ali and Elizabeth Kramen, travelers from Missoula, differed on protest strategy, debating compassionate engagement versus firm opposition. Their discussion highlighted differing perspectives on how to effectively advocate for change.
