Residents Raise Concerns Over Semiconductor Facility Plans

In Peoria, the recent approval of a new semiconductor facility has sparked debate among local residents. The city council gave the green light to a development agreement with Amkor Technology in February 2024, paving the way for a significant project.

Planned to occupy 56 acres near Loop 303 and Lone Mountain Parkway, the facility faces opposition from those living in the nearby Vistancia community. Concerns range from increased traffic congestion to potential chemical contamination, prompting residents to voice their unease.

Joel Resnick, a Peoria resident, expressed the community’s desire for a more suitable location for the plant. “We only want what’s just for the communities, and we’ve asked them to have the courage, they being city council, to have the courage to take a stance and find a way to relocate this plant elsewhere, because we won’t get a second chance to get it right,” he stated.

While some, like Mike Edmiston, support the Amkor Technology project, they question the current site choice. Edmiston suggests, “The plant cannot go in the Vistancia area, move it out another three or four miles into an area where there is no planned residential growth yet.”

As the groundbreaking for the project is anticipated in September, residents remain committed to voicing their concerns at city council meetings.
