Article Summary –
Pima County residents will vote on school funding proposals for Amphitheater, Marana Unified, and Continental districts. Arizona ranks low in per-student funding, prompting a call for voter-approved measures. The League of Women Voters urges support, emphasizing public education’s role in democracy.
This election season, Pima County voters face crucial decisions on school funding measures. Amphitheater, Marana Unified, and Continental Elementary School Districts in Tucson and Green Valley seek voter approval to boost funding.
As President of the League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson, I strongly encourage voters in these districts to vote “yes.” The Education Law Center reports Arizona ranked last in student funding in 2023. Arizona also trails most states in PreK-12 education funding relative to its economy. This underfunding is unsustainable. With state and federal funds falling short, districts rely on voter-approved bonds and overrides.
The League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson maintains that public education is key to democracy. We advocate for expanded funding sources, central fund distribution, classroom funding, and banning public funds for private schools.
Statewide, the Arizona League supports a public education system offering equitable opportunities for all students to succeed in a dynamic world. Backing public education means investing in communities and enhancing future generations’ opportunities for prosperity.
