Prescribed Burns Commence Near Grand Canyon’s North Rim

This week, the serene landscapes of the Grand Canyon’s North Rim will witness crucial forest management activities. Authorities from Kaibab National Forest and Grand Canyon National Park have announced the initiation of several controlled burns, aiming to foster forest health and mitigate the threat of severe wildfires.

The operations kick off with the 700-acre burn at Telephone Hill, strategically located along State Route 67, just south of Jacob Lake. In tandem, the park’s teams will tackle the Slopes Project, targeting up to 1,500 acres for burning.

Additionally, the efforts will extend to nearly a thousand acres, encompassing areas around the Walhalla Plateau and sites near the North Rim Visitor Center as well as the Grand Canyon Lodge. These proactive measures are designed to enhance the ecosystem’s resilience and safety.

Travelers and visitors should expect visible smoke from key vantage points such as Highway 89A and the South Rim. The prescribed burns are slated to wrap up by the week’s end.
