Ski Resort Strike Resolution in Park City

The bustling ski season at Park City Mountain Resort faced disruption due to a ski patrollers’ strike, but a new agreement promises to restore order. This development comes as the resort, located in the Wasatch Range near Salt Lake City, reached a settlement with the ski patrollers’ union, aiming to end the strike that began during the busy holiday period.

A joint statement from the union’s executive board announced that a vote on the agreement is set for Wednesday, highlighting that the deal addresses the interests of both parties. The statement also emphasized, “Everyone looks forward to restoring normal resort operations and moving forward together as one team.” Although the specifics of the agreement remain undisclosed, it is confirmed to extend through April 2027.

The strike, initiated on December 27, involved approximately 200 ski patrollers who cited wages insufficient to meet the high cost of living in Park City, which also hosts Deer Valley Resort. This labor action led to reduced staffing levels, resulting in closed runs and lengthy lift lines, much to the frustration of skiers, some of whom expressed support by chanting “Pay your employees!” from the lift lines, as seen in social media footage.

The Park City Professional Ski Patrollers Association has been in negotiations since March, advocating for higher wages due to significant inflation since 2022. The union’s request was to increase the hourly wage from $21 to $23, arguing that $27 per hour is necessary to afford living expenses in the area. Additionally, the union sought improved pay for veteran ski patrollers, as the current wage scale reaches its peak after five years of service.
