The future of approximately 350,000 Venezuelans residing in the United States has been cast into uncertainty following a significant Supreme Court decision. The Court has overturned a prior ruling that had prevented the Trump administration from revoking the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) granted to these individuals.
For aid worker Dora Rodriguez in Tucson, the ruling has immediate implications for the Venezuelan families she assists. “People who are coming from a country that they don’t have rights, they don’t have a voice. So what they were seeking in America is to be free to do better in life,” Rodriguez explained, highlighting the aspirations of those affected.
Venezuelans are among several nationalities that have been granted TPS due to conflicts, economic instability, or environmental disasters back home. Anticipating potential changes, some Venezuelans are exploring more permanent immigration solutions, such as asylum applications.
According to Rodriguez, the TPS program has provided immediate work authorization, enabling recipients to engage in legal employment. However, with the new ruling, some Venezuelans face the challenge of renewing their status only to find their applications denied. “With TPS they got their work permit right away, and they were already working legally, and now a few of them have to renew, and that’s being denied,” she noted.
