Trump Administration Reinstates Family Detention Centers and Launches New Immigration App

In a significant shift from previous policies, the Trump administration has recently reintroduced immigration detention centers designed for families. This marks a departure from the approach taken during former President Joe Biden’s tenure. Additionally, officials have transformed the CBP One app, previously used to assist asylum seekers in Mexico, into CBP Home. This new platform encourages undocumented immigrants to voluntarily report their intentions to leave the United States.

These developments are part of a broader strategy aimed at expediting deportations, which experts warn could have significant repercussions for both U.S. communities and the economy at large.

Immigrants play vital roles across various sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, construction, and education. Michael Ettlinger, a senior fellow at the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, highlighted the potential economic impact of these deportation efforts. “If I’m a homeowner, am I gonna make a down payment on a kitchen remodel if the contractor may lose their work authorization and be removed from the country,” he explained.

Ettlinger further noted that the absence of immigrant labor could lead to a decline in wages and job opportunities for non-immigrant workers. Companies might opt to reduce their workforce due to the prevailing uncertainty. Historical evidence suggests that mass deportation campaigns have previously resulted in job losses for native-born workers as well.

“Employers can’t find U.S.-born replacements for the deported immigrants, for the kinds of jobs they do, so they downsize their business as a whole, that means layoffs or lower pay for their non-immigrant employees,” Ettlinger stated.
