Exploring the Journey of Michigan’s Poet Laureate: Nandi Comer
In a state with a rich literary tradition, the role of Poet Laureate stands as a beacon of cultural expression. After a long hiatus since Edgar Guest’s tenure, Michigan reinstated this prestigious position in 2021, appointing Detroit native Nandi Comer in 2023. Recently, Comer shared insights into her journey and work during a visit to Central Michigan University.
David Nicholas: I’m David Nicholas with Central Focus, where we delve into the innovative spirit of Central Michigan University’s community. Nandi Comer, who currently holds the title of Michigan Poet Laureate, joined me for a conversation in our studio. I promised not to pigeonhole her work, a commitment to understanding her creative inspirations.
Nandi Comer: Often, there’s a misconception that nature poets solely focus on their surroundings, neglecting other themes like technology. However, I continually explore various subjects. My time in nature, while cherished, doesn’t always translate directly into my poetry. Instead, I aim to represent unnamed experiences, documenting narratives that resonate deeply with communities, particularly in Detroit. For instance, writing about the roots of techno music and its cultural impact allows me to give voice to stories previously unrepresented in poetry. This mission extends to amplifying tales of women, Black women, and Detroit’s rich history. My work strives to articulate what has long existed within our collective consciousness.
DN: In your role, you’ve traveled extensively across Michigan. Have these encounters inspired new ideas?
NC: While I journal about these experiences, they gradually evolve into poems. This role has been a learning journey, especially in understanding Michigan’s diverse landscapes. Visiting places like the Upper Peninsula, I discovered the vast differences within our state. Though these insights may not yet feature in my poetry, they have profoundly changed me during these two years of service.
DN: Thank you, Nandi Comer, for your contributions to Michigan’s arts and for sharing your story with our audience at CMU. Your dedication is evident, and we appreciate your continued efforts to advocate for the arts.
NC: Thanks for having me.
