As tensions rise in Europe, Michigan’s Governor Gretchen Whitmer embarks on a strategic mission to bolster the state’s aerospace and defense sectors. Her journey begins in Paris, where she aims to solidify international partnerships amidst shifting U.S. commitments to NATO and ongoing geopolitical unrest.
Whitmer’s presence at the Eurosatory conference is pivotal for enhancing Michigan’s global footprint in defense and aerospace. This event is renowned as one of the largest gatherings focused on security, defense, and weaponry.
Announcing her goals, Whitmer stated, “Michigan is open for business and on the move, working with anyone and competing with anyone to onshore good-paying jobs for Michiganders.” Her office highlighted this mission’s objectives, emphasizing the state’s role in advanced manufacturing and innovation.
The Michigan pavilion at the conference showcases a dozen companies, reflecting the state’s robust $30 billion defense and security industry, as noted by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). A noteworthy achievement for Michigan is the recent commitment to host a new fighter mission at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Macomb County.
Following her visit to Paris, Whitmer, accompanied by business leaders and officials from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, plans to extend her tour to Belgium and Luxembourg.
This marks Whitmer’s second European trade mission this year, following her visits to Germany and Italy in February.
Coinciding with Whitmer’s trip, President Donald Trump is also in France for the Group of 7 summit. The president’s strained interactions with NATO allies have contributed to increased security and defense spending, an opportunity Whitmer aims to leverage.
