In a significant health update, former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, as revealed by his personal office.
The 82-year-old former leader underwent further testing last week following the discovery of a prostate nodule. The cancer has a Gleason score of 9, indicating a particularly aggressive form of the disease. The Gleason score is a measure used to evaluate the prognosis of men with prostate cancer, based on the appearance of cancerous cells in biopsy samples.
Despite the aggressive nature of the diagnosis, the condition is reportedly hormone-sensitive, which opens the door to effective treatment options. Biden and his family are actively considering different courses of treatment, according to the statement released.
Prostate cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men in the U.S. and is the most common cancer after non-melanoma skin cancer, as noted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
After completing his first term and amid scrutiny regarding his age, Biden chose to exit the 2024 presidential race, throwing his support behind then-Vice President Kamala Harris, as reported during the summer.
During his tenure as vice president, Biden spearheaded the Cancer Moonshot initiative, a campaign launched under President Obama, following the death of his son, Beau Biden, from brain cancer. As president, he reignited the initiative, pledging to significantly cut the cancer death rate. “We can do this. I promise you, we can do this,” he assured in a 2022 address at the White House. “All those we lost, all those we miss — we can end cancer as we know it.” For more details, visit here.
Expressing their sympathy, former President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump conveyed their support through a post on Truth Social. “We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery,” Trump stated.
In a post on X, Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, also expressed their sentiments, highlighting Biden’s resilience. “Joe is a fighter — and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership,” Harris wrote, expressing hope for a swift recovery.
